Sector: Warehousing & Logistics

Location: Derby, Midlands

Project Type: Multi-Zone Temperature, Humidity & Biosecurity Control for Confectionery Storage and Co-Packing

Executive Summary

Project Triathlon sets a new standard in precision environmental management for the confectionery logistics sector. Jet Environmental delivered a fully integrated solution encompassing temperature, humidity, and pressure (biosecurity) control across four distinct warehouse zones, each with unique operational requirements.

This case study highlights the innovative engineering, operational impact, and strategic value delivered to a major confectionery storage and co-packing facility.

Project Overview

The facility required rigorous control of temperature, humidity, and air pressure to safeguard sensitive confectionery products and ensure optimal working conditions.

Jet Environmental’s bespoke system combines seven balanced JET induction systems, advanced humidity regulation, and pressure management for biosecurity, all orchestrated by a central chilled-water plant and intelligent automation.

Solution Architecture

Multi-Zone Environmental Control

DSC_0575.JPG
  • Humidity Control: Each zone features dedicated humidity sensors and modulating humidification/dehumidification units, maintaining precise relative humidity (RH) tailored to product and process needs.

  • Pressure (Biosecurity) Control: Pressure differentials are actively managed to prevent cross-contamination. Negative pressure in the Taint Store ensures containment of tainted or returned goods, while positive pressure in storage and co-pack areas protects product integrity.

System Components

  • Balanced JET Induction Systems: High-velocity induction nozzles ensure uniform air distribution, supported by medium velocity ductwork.

  • Air Handling Units (AHUs): Each AHU integrates bag and panel filtration, chilled water cooling coils, modulating gas-fired heaters, humidity control modules, and supply fans with run/standby motors.

  • Chiller Plant: Four R32 air-cooled water chillers with multi-circuit compressors, primary/standby pumps, automatic water treatment, and insulated buffer tank.

  • Automation & Monitoring: A Trend standalone control system (AES Ltd) provides real-time monitoring, automated adjustment, and remote diagnostics for all environmental parameters.

Performance & Impact

  • Year-Round Consistency: Stable temperature and humidity conditions are maintained regardless of external fluctuations, ensuring product quality and staff comfort.

  • Biosecurity Assurance: Pressure management mitigates contamination risks, supporting stringent food safety standards.

  • Energy Efficiency: Modular design and intelligent controls optimize energy use and facilitate future expansion.

  • Operational Excellence: The solution delivers low-maintenance reliability, adaptability, and compliance with industry best practices.
