RAF St. Athan - Glamorgan

The Defence Aviation and Repair Agency (DARA) RAF St. Athan - Vale of Glamorgan

Project Red Dragon is a £77 million specialist aircraft repair and maintenance facility constructed for DARA at RAF St. Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan. The project saw outdated accommodation get replaced in a new super-hangar fitted with plastic media stripping and engine test facilities. The project gave DARA the ability to inspect, test, repair, modify and overhaul aircraft and equipment.

This state-of-the-art facility was the largest single construction project undertaken in Wales to date, consolidating DARA’s fixed wing aircraft repair operations at its St. Athan base.

The brief
Jet Environmental was awarded the HVAC contract for Project Red Dragon by M&E contractor, Emcor Drake & Scull of Bristol. Before being appointed, we worked with consulting engineers ARUP, to establish performance parameters and draw up the heating system design and specification.

The solution
With a working height of 14m, the hangars housing the new facilities required a boost facility to enable the temperature to return to an optimum level within 30 minutes. Air induction systems in the support buildings needed to deliver fresh air ventilation and have extraction capabilities.

We engineered 11 indirect gas-fired balanced Jet Environmental air induction systems to meet these complex climate control requirements.

To deliver an unobtrusive and aesthetic HVAC solution, the systems nozzles and ductwork were worked around the extensive services installed within the steelwork in the building's roof.

To avoid disruption to operations at Project Red Dragon, the AHUs were installed in separate plant rooms. The units serving the hangars were designed to operate on full fresh air in the summer months, while those serving the workshop areas operated in conjunction with the process extract system.

The AHUs featured fully modulating indirect gas-fired burners to ensure a constant supply temperature during fluctuating load conditions.
